Think Good Thoughts. Do Good Deeds. Be the Change.

20 Oct

You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.

~John Wooden

It is no secret that I have a stressful, thankless job.  Mondays are usually the worst.  Today was just absolutely, positively better than the norm.  I think it was in part because things are starting to calm down and even out among the little degenerates, in part because I decided it was going to be a better week, and in part because I performed three random acts of kindness for three people that will never ever be able to repay me.  While I do not want to divulge the details, I will share that it made each of their lives a little better for the short term with little cost or stress to me.  Why three?  You may ask.  Three is my favorite number and the borderline OCD psycho hose beast in me does many things in threes.  Just look at the title of this post, the parallel construction of the sentences within it, and the way I just keep saying things in threes.

This week I challenge you to do three random acts of kindness for three people who will never be able to repay you.   While I falter more often than I care to admit, I will strive to continue to be the change in 2008.

    I accept your challenge!

This is the one we’re doing with our youth group – each Friday a difference challenge is set and you have to try and do that.

This one’s easy for me (wow – that came out far more arrogant than I intended! Sorry). I’ve been working on the random acts of kindness for years now, and I’ve finally established a habit. The trick is to stop thinking in terms of grand acts and dramatic results. Hold a door for someone, let the poor bastard trying to make a left against traffic go in front of you, pick up the empty can and toss it in the bin on your way into the store. It’s all little ripples of good energy, and it all matters.
