“This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind. Let it be something good.”

I spent a large portion of today reflecting on the ghosts of 1971 through 2007 past and visualizing what I want to see happen in 2008. The truth is I have no idea what the future holds for me. I woke up this morning relishing in the thought that it is the beginning of a new year … another chance to “be the change.” As an educator, it is my job to use each day for good. What I leave behind is my legacy.
I resolve to “be the change.” This a simple yet immensely satisfying goal. It’s all-encompassing. It’s me.
Today, I practiced “being the change” countless times, as I read for pleasure, began to organize my home office, drank copious glasses of water, journaled my food intake, and blogged for the first of 365 days in a row. However, I could not help but giggle when I flossed in the bathtub.
As I threw away the used piece of floss, I pondered what good that would be in the long run. Perhaps flossing is a baby step. I may have aimed a little low today. However, in the attempt I realized that I am ready to be the change I wish to see in the world. Today I left behind something good … to read, at least.
