“In matters of principle, stand like a rock.”
-Thomas Jefferson
How many times have you heard or uttered “It’s the principle of the thing”? As an educator, I would say that I have more times than I care to enumerate. Today I am feeling rather opinionated; therefore, the following are some things I believe strongly in because “it’s the principle of the thing”:
1. Slow (and slower) drivers should drive in the RIGHT lane, especially when I am running late to work because I snoozed the clock five times and stopped at Starbucks.
2. Children under 3 should not be taken to a movie theater to see an adult movie even if they are sleeping.
3. Parents do not need to purchase their teens, tweens, elementary schoolers, toddlers, or newborns a cell phone in order to keep track of them. When I was a kid, it was called “curfew.” When Monkey Boy is old enough to drive and to work, he can buy his own cell phone and pay his own bill. Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ, kids have too much freedom and too many privileges these days!
4. I don’t know; can you? The English teacher in me cringes when students ask if they can go to the restroom. The sarcasm abounds, but they usually rephrase themselves correctly and are then granted permission with “Yes, you do have permission and the ability to urinate.”
5. This one may open a can of worms: Pro choice = my body, my health, my right
