Educators should never play favorites with students, but I admit that I have a few favorites. One student who I have worked with throughout the year to ensure positive behavior and academic success was recognized by his reading teacher to be Student of the Month for March. I was ecstatic to hear that he made a turnaround after a rough first semester. Each student who receives this recognition attends with his nominator, parent(s), and a staff member of his choice. He presented me with an invitation to attend as his guest today and requested, “I know you’re busy, but would you please be there? If it weren’t for you telling me what a good kid I am every day, I would still be ditching.” That’s the eloquence of a seventh grader who truly is a good kid. I suppose we are both honored. He for his improvements and I to know him.

Things like that really make it all worth while. I believe those times are a god-send and need to be cherished and undestood in the present context that now a connection exists. Wishing connections like that connect forever, is what I wish for in kids.
Validation! I told you that you were doing a great job. Congratulations on making a difference in at least one child’s life!
