This news report is just what all teachers want to see on the 11 o’clock broadcast. She is a former student who was in an elective class I taught to at-risk middle schoolers with truancy issues several years ago at an inner-city school. I guess I did not have the impact I had hoped for the sassy sixth grader. Sadly, I usually don’t see them on the news. Occasionally, I recognize a name in the obituaries. Was she in your class, RJW? As for the following, my sincerest apologies to Mr. Pete Seeger.
Where have all the parents gone?
Always absent
Where have all the parents gone?
Never around
Where have all the parents gone?
Kids still need them every one

Yes, I had her when she was in 6th. I knew from the name and face that I’d had her, I just couldn’t remember when.
Too bad. Hopefully the system will give her a chance to turn her life around.
